Eye Exam Coming Up? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you've got an eye exam penciled in for some time soon, there are ways to be extra ready for it. In order for us to guarantee that your exam is beneficial and worthwhile, there are several facts we'll need to know.

Because vision can be affected by seemingly unrelated changes in your body, you'll need to let us know about any differences you may have recently become aware of. A couple of examples of conditions you should let us know of are pregnancy, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even something which may seem trivial, like allergies. Are you on any medication? We'll need to know what you're taking, because drugs, even if they're non-prescription, can also have an effect on your eye health.

Things like drinking or smoking can have a poor effect on eyesight, so if these are parts of your lifestyle, keep us informed. Tell us how you use your eyes everyday. Are you at university and doing a lot of reading? Being informed of these details will make it easier for us to choose your treatment plan.

Because several eye-related diseases are hereditary, it's important that you let us know about any of them in your immediate family, especially macular degeneration or glaucoma. Having an understanding of the eye diseases you might be prone to can make it much easier for us to keep an eye out for and keep track of any red flags.

Warning signs include changes to your vision like seeing double, spots or flashing lights. If you start to experience any of these, call us as soon as possible. With the information we have about your history, coupled with our expertise, we'll get to bottom of what's behind the symptom, and figure out the best possible treatment. Don't forget to bring your current pair of glasses along when you see us. Your specs can tell us important things about your vision, even if you're a contact lens wearer. Together, we will establish the most productive way to tend to all your vision needs.

To schedule you eye exam call our Austin optometrist (only minutes away from Arboretum, Cedar Park or Jollyville).
