Visiting a new eye doctor can feel like a big unknown, but at McCormick Vision Source, we make the process smooth and stress-free. Whether you're coming in for a routine checkup, new glasses, or contact lenses, knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to your first visit, from check-in to checkout.
Before Your Appointment: Forms & What to Bring
To make your visit as efficient as possible, McCormick Vision Source sends out new patient forms in advance. You can fill these out at home at your convenience.
If you don’t complete them ahead of time, you’ll be asked to fill them out on a tablet in the office. (Don’t worry—if technology isn’t your thing, a staff member can help.)
What to bring with you:
- Any glasses or contact lenses you currently wear
- Your vision and medical insurance information
- A list of any eye or health concerns you’d like to discuss
Step 1: Checking In at the Front Desk
When you arrive, the friendly front desk staff will greet you and confirm your paperwork. If you’ve already completed the forms, this step will be quick. If not, you can use the in-office tablets to enter your information.
Once you're checked in, a technician will guide you to the pre-testing area.
Step 2: Pre-Testing – Getting the Basics
Before seeing the doctor, you’ll go through a few quick and painless tests. These help gather essential information about your eye health and prescription.
- You’ll rest your chin on a machine while looking at a small target.
- Some tests check your eye pressure, peripheral vision, and overall eye health.
- No bright lights or dilation are used routinely—most patients will have an ultra-widefield retinal scan instead.
After these tests, you’ll be led to the exam room to meet your eye doctor.
Step 3: The Eye Exam with Your Optometrist
Once the pre-testing is complete, your optometrist will meet you in the exam room to begin a comprehensive eye exam.
This part of the visit includes:
- Reviewing Your Health and Vision History – Your doctor will go over your concerns, past prescriptions, and any medical conditions that may affect your vision.
- Visual Acuity Test – Reading letters on an eye chart to assess how well you see at different distances.
- Refraction Test – This is the “Which is better, one or two?” test to fine-tune your prescription.
- Eye Health Evaluation – The doctor will check for signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration.
If you wear contact lenses, your exam may include additional tests to ensure the best lens fit and prescription.
If dilation is necessary, the doctor will discuss it with you. However, most patients will have an Optomap retinal scan instead, which provides a wide-angle image of the back of the eye without the need for dilation drops.
Step 4: Choosing Glasses or Contacts
After your exam, a technician will escort you to the optical area if you need new glasses.
An optician will:
- Help you choose frames that match your style and face shape.
- Explain lens options, such as anti-glare coatings, blue light protection, and progressive lenses.
- Go over your insurance benefits and pricing details.
If you’re getting contact lenses, you may have a fitting session where the doctor will ensure the lenses are comfortable and provide clear vision.
Step 5: Checkout and Ordering Your Prescription
Once you’ve finalized your glasses or contacts, the front desk team will help with:
- Processing your insurance and payment.
- Scheduling any follow-up appointments, if needed.
- Providing an estimated pickup date for your eyewear.
Most glasses are ready within 10 business days, while contact lenses may be available sooner. If your prescription is finalized, contacts can be shipped directly to your home.
Your Follow-Up and Eyewear Pickup
Once your glasses arrive, McCormick Vision Source recommends coming in for a fitting adjustment to ensure your frames sit comfortably. If you have any concerns about your new prescription, the team is happy to assist.
